Teton - River Road Ride - 2008 . . .
on our
route to the Pacific Northwest
Updated: 11/30/08
We overheard someone at an overlook telling someone about a road that was like an African safari. He showed us the road on the map. We checked at the visitors center about how bad the road was. He said if you have four wheel drive it would be okay. He suggested that we start the 12 mile drive about 7:30pm in hopes of seeing animals on the move.
The entrance to the road was near Moose Junction. We started our ride about 7:30pm as suggested.
We turned off the asphalt and onto the dirt road.
Almost immediately, our African Safari started . . .
We drove through miles of these bushes.
Many times Fred would walk to the edge of the cliff and photograph the Snake River below.
Every once in a while, we would turn around and look at the Tetons in the evening and night sky.
As the sun set, changing settings on the camera helped brighten the photographs.
The people in the raft waved when they saw Fred on the cliff.
A road to remember . . .
In a very rough section of the road, coming around a hill, we came upon moose in the road. Of course, Fred was concentrating on his driving so the camera was not as ready as usual. He had been watching for an animal on a ridge silhouetted against the sky. Well, this is the best opportunity he had on this night.
It was getting dark as we progressed slowly along River Road.
The road continued to be rough. It became more difficult to look ahead and plan for the bumps. That meant driving slower. And, it was getting too dark to make photographs.
Eventually, we arrived at our left turn toward the main road. Looking back at a sign, we questioned how good the fishing was that someone would drive this road to fish.
Soon we saw a stop sign - our adventure was ending.
Due to the rough road and darkness, it took us two and a half hours to complete the 12 mile ride.
It didn't turn out to be the 'African Safari' we expected. But, it was an experience not many people have in the Tetons. Just like our drive to Eagle, Alaska - we suggest that you skip taking a ride on River Road in the Tetons.
